The Intel Chipset Device Software installs the Windows* INF files. An INF is a text file that provides the operating system with information about a piece of hardware on the system. In the case of the current Intel Chipset Device Software, that information is primarily the product name for the piece of hardware. This allows the operating system to show the correct name for that piece of hardware in Device Manager.Note: The Intel Chipset Device Software does not install drivers for AGP or USB. Do not download this utility if your device manufacturer is recommending it to correct an "AGP driver," "AGP GART," or "USB driver" issue; it will not correct your issue.Supported Chipsets:
I just build a box with an Asus motherboard with Intel H97 chipset (h97i-plus). The on-board Intel LAN adapter should be i218-v. I have tried both Win 2012 Server Essentials and Fedora 20 installs. Both kernels do not recognize the Intel chipset and on-board LAN. I tried downloading drivers from Asus and Intel. I had no success. I looked at the release notes on Intel drivers, and it explicitly says no support for i218-v.

Chipset drivers play an important role in controlling communications between many components in your system. To improve your system performance, it is necessary to update chipset drivers timely. How to update chipset drivers? This post from MiniTool will provide you with detailed steps.
Chipset drivers have a significant impact on the communication between different components including the hard drives, system memory, etc. The outdated chipset drivers will slow down your system performance.
Step 3. Then there are 2 options to update chipset drivers. Here you can select the Search automatically for updated driver software option, which can help you install the updated chipset drivers automatically.
Step 5. In the pop-up window, you can select the Product type and Operating system type form the down-down menus to filter the chipset drivers that you want to download. Alternatively, you can type the product name or keywords in the search bar.
Once you have downloaded your new driver, you'll need to install it. In Windows, use a built-in utility called Device Manager, which allows you to see all of the devices recognized by your system, and the drivers associated with them.
edit: I'm unsure if this changes what the problem might be, but before troubleshooting I was only getting download speeds of around 5-7Mbps and seeing intermittent internet connectivity to my network (Windows would show that I was connected to my network, but not to the internet). My adapter would also occasionally disable itself, as shown in network connections control panel, and wouldn't let me re-enable it. A hard shutdown (selecting reset would cause my computer to hang) seemed to reset it back to normal. It was only after uninstalling all drivers, leaving only 17.15.0.5, that I saw my download speeds increase to what I'm seeing now. It's only been about 5 days since doing this, but I noticed any intermittent connection since; the problem with the adapter randomly disabling itself was fairly infrequent (sometimes not happening for a couple weeks), so I can't be sure that has been resolved or if its related.
